Benenden Health was founded in 1905 to provide treatment for postal workers suffering from Tuberculosis. Over the past 115 years, we've supported our members through many crises, and we're helping to support people now. Member contributions have always been used to support the health and wellbeing of our members. That hasn’t and won’t change now, or in the future.
As a not-for-profit organisation, we're proud to be part of a community that cares deeply for people's health and strives to support our members every day, whether it's through our 24/7 GP and Mental Health helplines, or other services. We all deserve access to great quality, affordable healthcare. After all, our health and wellbeing is never simple, but caring for it should be.

Every Benenden Health member pays exactly the same price each month. And that money goes into a pot to support our members when they need help. Our mutuality enables our members to be one big community; a community that’s there for each other every day and a community where everybody is equal.
As a mutual we're run both by and for our members which means you can have your say in how the organisation is run. Key decisions are taken by our members so the more members who get involved, the more ideas we have, the better the debate.
Our Board of Directors have a responsibility to make decisions in the best interest of our members.
The board sets the strategic direction of the society ensuring the culture is aligned with its purpose and values.
The board is comprised of six Independent Non-executive Directors (including the chairman) six Branch-nominated Non-executive Directors and two Executive Directors, who are senior employees of Benenden Health.
Our Annual Report is published every year and details our strategic report and financial statements.
We are governed by our rulebook, and any changes to it need to be agreed by our members at our Annual Conference.
